The City of Wizards
The young Syr’dan arrives in the fabled Averot’h to watch the wizards’ tournament. The city is ruled by the Council of Wizards, Ka’tan, and a Mage who wields power unlike any other in the world. Syr’dan does not yet know that in Averot’h he will find not only entertainment but also love, hatred, and possibly death. The Ka’tani swoop down from the sky like vultures, taking human sacrifices, while their leader, the treacherous Burnt Wizard, plots against both the people and the king. And the Mage himself will challenge Syr’dan to a duel in which only the victor can remain alive… Jiří Mazurek (1974) is one of the new generation of Czech fantasy writers, and has published a number of high-quality short stories in a relatively short time. He is also the author of the young adult sci-fi story Želes (2007) and two knightly fantasy novels, The Legend of Rennard (2009) and The Legend of Garonna (2009; Karel Čapek Award), published under the Pevnost Edition label.
