The Birth of the Czech State 568–1055

A look at the earliest history of the Czech state by a renowned historian

In his book, historian and archaeologist Petr Charvát presents a comprehensive picture of the origin and formation of the early Czech state, which he traces from the first signs of social and political organisation in the early Middle Ages to the consolidation of statehood and ducal power during the reign of Břetislav I. The author places the development of the Slavic population in our territory in a broader European context, but also points to the numerous influences and impulses coming from non-European cultures. The focus is not only on political developments, but also on economic relations and cultural and religious changes, especially the gradual penetration of Christianity.
