The billfold
Alma loved money, and money loved Alma. A novel from the author of historical bestsellers.
When Alma was thirteen, a currency reform was declared in post-war Czechoslovakia, and it ruined her family. The doctor's daughter, accustomed to life in a large villa, suddenly found herself in a tiny ground-floor flat with two grandmothers and a poor social standing. But Alma was not the kind of girl to sit around idly. This is her story. The story of a woman who, during the era of totalitarianism, clawed her way up to join the wealthiest shadow elite. She lived in fairytale luxury, but what she longed for most was something that money couldn't buy… This novel from the author of historical bestsellers invites you into the times of post-war and Normalisation-era Czechoslovakia and its grey economy.
