The basics of phylogenetic analysis
Professor Macholán's book is the first of its kind in our country. It provides an overview and a brief description of the most commonly used methods of phylogenetic analysis today, such as evolutionary models, distance methods, maximum parsimony and likelihood methods, Bayesian analysis, hypothesis testing, and tree comparison. Special chapters are dedicated to phylogenetic methods based on morphological characters and coalescence theory. The publication provides basic information about the assumptions on which the individual methods are based, their advantages and disadvantages, and how they differ. The author's goal is to enable the reader to make informed decisions when choosing the optimal approach to solve a given problem for a specific type of data, as well as to correctly interpret the results obtained. The book will certainly be welcomed by students and researchers across a wide range of evolutionary fields, including systematic biology, biogeography, developmental and behavioural biology, ecology, and conservation genetics.
