Terezín Fortress against Prussian expansionism
Terezín was one of the largest fortresses of Austria, which was built against Prussian expansionism. Nowadays, the general opinion is that Terezín was a useless fortress because it could not stop the Prussian advance in 1866. However, a deeper look at the issue at hand leads to the conclusion that this theory is false. In the period 1740-1779, there was virtually constant fighting between Austria and Prussia. However, the next war between the two countries did not take place until 1866, some 80 years later. The reason for such a long peace was certainly not the good relations between the two empires, rather the opposite. Both powers had ambitions to become the leading element of the German-speaking countries. On several occasions, their heated relations threatened to escalate into a military conflict. In the end, however, there was no war until 1866. Therefore, one might wonder whether the construction of several strong fortresses on the borders of the Czech lands after 1780 was one of the reasons why the Prussians did not invade Bohemia again. Even if this reasoning were not true, the Terezín fortress was able to block all strategic communications that led along the Elbe River into the interior of Bohemia. The publication Fortress Terezín against Prussian expansionism focuses on the fate of Terezín in the 19th century. It appears, among other things. the now forgotten old and new bridgehead, which was built on the right bank of the Elbe River, and the Bohušovice outpost.
