Teplouš
Defenceless in a hostile world
A beautiful novel by the spiritual father of beatniks. The main character, a homosexual and drug addict, the author's alter ego, is unsparing with himself and his surroundings, describing his years spent in Mexico.
A beautiful, penetrating novel by the spiritual father of the beatniks, who describes his years in Mexico in an unsparing way to himself and his surroundings. Main character, a homosexual and a drug addict, the author's alter ego, she's lonely, uncertain, defenseless, seeking contact with the outside world and love, that could save him from internal disintegration. Burroughs perfectly depicts the mental torment of himself and the environment of the bars in Mexico City, the dirty streets of the city, which he describes in sickening detail. Yet we are mesmerized by its depiction, drawn to the author's stripping of his soul naked. "I glanced fleetingly at the handwriting of the Teplouš and felt that I simply could not read it. My past was a poisoned river, I've been lucky enough to have, that I escaped, River, in which one feels immediately threatened, even years after the events recorded. - Painful to the extent that I find it difficult to read about them at all, let alone write about them," Burroughs wrote in 1985 on the occasion of the first edition of the book, completed in 1953.
