Talking about a dog and a cat

The complete version of Talking about a dog and a cat performed by actors from Dejvice Theatre

That was back then, when the dog and the cat were farming together and wanted to do everything the way big people do it: Washing the dirty floor, baking a cake, going for a walk on Sunday, writing a letter or doing theatre. But because they are not human, things don't always turn out the way they would like - but their peculiar solutions are always amusing and original. In some of the stories, the dog and cat also visit Mr Čapek, with whom they talk about "serious things" and help him write stories for children.
The text is based on the critical edition of Josef Čapek's writings and, in addition to nine classic stories, it also includes the story How the dog and the cat celebrated 28 October, which was deleted after 1948 for political reasons. Instead of Čapek's well-known pictures, the audiobook is accompanied by illustrations by the art duo Tomski&Polanski, who have conceived their current version as a tribute to the author.

Josef Čapek

He studied painting and graphic arts at the Prague School of Arts and Crafts and then spent a year in Paris. After his return, he became involved in artistic and social life with his brother Karel. From 1917 to 1921 he worked as editor of Narodni listy, from where he went to Lidove noviny, where he was editor and art critic until 1939, when he was arrested by the Gestapo on 1 September 1939 and spent the war in concentration camps. Although he is better known as an artist than as a writer, his literary work forms an integral part of his oeuvre. His best-known book, however, remains his children's story The Tale of the Dog and the Cat (1929).

Dejvice Theatre

The first performance took place at the Dejvice Theatre on 14 October 1992. Since then, it has built a reputation as one of the most sought-after and most visited Czech theatres, which is almost permanently sold out. It offers productions of different genres, but with a common denominator: good theatre with a distinct point of view and an emphasis on the actors' personalities. With the arrival of Miroslav Krobot as artistic director in 1996, a strong cast was formed, which attracts audiences to this day and has become famous for television series such as The Fourth Star (2014), Dabing Street (2018), and The Destruction of Dejvice Theatre (2019), which reflect the unique outlook of the entire ensemble. Martin Myšička has been the artistic director of Dejvice Theatre since 2017.
