Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum. Czech Republic. Volume IV. The Luboš Král Collection. Egypt.
Another volume of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum, Czech Republic project has been published by the National Museum in cooperation with the Czech Numismatic Society in the end of 2021. The catalogue presents the collection of Egyptian provincial coins, collected by ing. Luboš Král, a long-standing member of the Czech Numismatic Society. In total, 584 coins is represented in this volume including a small quantity of duplicates (always stuck from different dies). The core of the collection consists of Alexandrian issues; coins of the Egyptian nomes, which are quite rare, are represented by mere two specimens (nos. 583-584). The collection documents the coin production in Egypt from the time of Augustus till the end of the provincial mint in 295/6. The basic criteria for incorporation into the collection have been the quality and good state of preservation of the numismatic material allowing its further classification. The presence of coins of particular rulers reflects their occurrence on the numismatic market as well as different volume of mint production. It is most apparent in the case of coinage from Augustus to Caligula and later of Marcus Aurelius and especially Septimius Severus and Caracalla, showing considerable decline. The core of the collection (almost 65%) consists of 3rd century coins from Elagabal till the rulers of the first Tetrarchy. The collection illustrates also the restrain from multi denominational system consisting of tetradrachms and several bronze denominations. From the reign of Commodus on, only tetradrachms are present in this catalogue.
At the end of 2021, another volume of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum (Czech Republic) edition was published by the National Museum in cooperation with the Czech Numismatic Society. The book publishes a collection of Egyptian provincial coins, collected by a long-time member of ČNS ing. Luboš Kral. There are 584 mintages presented in the book, only a small number of duplicates of the same type are found here - however, they are always different mints. The core of the set is represented by Alexandrian coins, Egyptian nomes are represented by only two pieces (no. 583-584), as they are rarely found on the market. The collection seeks to document the development of coin production from Augustus until the demise of the provincial mint in 295/6. The basic criterion for the coins included in the set is their good preservation, which enables their precise identification. The representation of sovereigns in the collection reflects primarily the frequency of their appearance on the market, but also indirectly the smaller volumes of coin production. This is clearly evident in the coins from Augustus to Caligula, then again under Marcus Aurelius and especially under Septimius Severus and Caracalla, when there is a clear drop in production in terms of known types. The core of the collection (almost 65%) consists of coins from the 3rd century from Elagabalus to the rulers of the first Tetrachrya. The collection also documents a retreat from the multi-denomination monetary system consisting of tetradrachms and a few bronze denominations - starting with Commodus, only tetradrachms are represented.
