Lead your chariot and plough over the bones of the dead
A moral thriller from the Czech-Polish border, where animals know more than humans.
Olga Tokarczuk's novel could be described as a "moral thriller". The protagonist of the story is Jana Dušejková, a civil engineer who has to earn her living as an English and geography teacher at a school in the Kladsko basin on the Czech-Polish border. In winter she also works as a caretaker of the summer apartments. Her passion is astrology and above all she loves animals. He tries to help and protect them in every possible way, and fights against people who hurt them. He warns against indiscriminate destruction of nature, he sees human destinies inscribed in the stars. He belongs to the circle of enthusiastic readers of the English poet William Blake (the title of the book is a quote from his poem).
One day, Jan's neighbour is found dead. Another murder follows, and then another... Poachers and prominent members of society die mysteriously. Only the animals are mute witnesses. The heroine knows something about these murders, but the police don't listen to her - but Jana Dušejková can read the stars...
