Surgery for the elderly

A unique publication that currently addresses the increasingly important and growing issue of diagnosis and treatment of the elderly in surgical wards. The book is intended primarily for surgeons and intensivists, but is also relevant to physicians in other disciplines, including internists and first-line physicians. It is therefore intended for all those who come into contact with elderly patients, including non-medical health care professionals at all levels. The book by the authors of the 1st Surgical Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Prague deals with the problems of elderly patients from the perspective of surgical diseases. This is due to the significantly increasing number of these patients. Demographic developments provide warning figures in this respect. Already in 2006, there were more than 100 citizens under the age of 15 for every 100 citizens over the age of 65, and the average age of patients undergoing surgery is increasing significantly. The authors specify the peculiarities of the approach in a highly technical manner: in the preparation of operations, indications for individual diagnoses, the choice of surgical approach, the actual procedures and postoperative, more often intensive care. Of particular importance is the chapter dealing with the specifics of nursing care.
