Successful women in the shadow of famous men
The book presents the lives of five exceptional women who have contributed to the development of sociological methods and their application in applied research: Florence Kelley, Vivian M. Palmer, Marie Strawberry, Herta Herzog and Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann. These women stood out for the tenacity with which they pursued their dreams and goals, they were proud, extraordinary in their originality, and yet willing to work as a team. They were able to understand empirical data and methodological contexts and tried to promote innovative approaches to research, their ideas often guiding famous research projects to this day. Without their innovation, energy and creative ideas, many projects would not be as successful. The glory, however, usually went to the male theorists in whose shadow they worked. < br> The book offers an account of the scientific and personal lives of these several women researchers, their courage, patience, difficult decisions and the success of their endeavours. It takes the reader through almost the entire twentieth century and reminds them what these pioneering women contributed to empirical sociological research.
