Stories from old Jewish Prague
When did the first Jews settle in the territory of Prague? It can be said with near certainty that Jewish merchants and money changers appeared in the area below Prague Castle as early as the 10th century, and mentions of the first Jewish synagogue are only two centuries younger. But when was the foundation stone of the Old-New Synagogue laid? Was it truly brought from Jerusalem by angels on their snow-white wings? Was the Golem the first artificial man in the world, or was he also made of flesh and blood like any ordinary mortal? These and similar stories from the time when the so-called Jewish ghetto began to form in the city, from the period of the flourishing Josefov, from the medieval Jewish pogroms, and from the times when Jewish communities also began to emerge outside the Old Town, are contained in another publication by M. Wagnerová, mapping the history of old Jewish Prague. Its inhabitants at the time represented approximately a quarter of Prague's entire population. Their long and thorny past has left behind many monuments and even more tales and stories that have earned an irreplaceable place among other old Prague legends.
