Stories and Tales from the Secret Annexe
Anne Frank's literary estate also includes her so-called 'Book of Tales', about which she wrote in her diary on 7th August 1943: 'A few weeks ago I started writing a story, something completely made up, and I enjoyed it so much that my written family is growing splendidly.' Less than a month later, she began to copy this 'written family' into a special, large, hardback notebook (in fact, an accounting book). On the first page, she inscribed: 'Stories and episodes from the Secret Annex, described by Anne Frank'; on the bottom of the same page, she noted: 'dedicated: Thursday 2nd September 1943'.
As the title suggests, there are two categories: 'completely made-up' stories and narratives that describe events from life in hiding. At the end of the book, Anne Frank added a table of contents in which she also indicated which category each text belonged to.
