Although the writer JOSEF NESVADBA was and is associated with the genre of science fiction, he himself resisted it and considered it a simplistic label. In an interview for Czechoslovak Radio in 1965 he specified: "I don't really write pure science fiction - except for a few short stories. Originally the genre was called "those other stories", so I say I write those other stories. And in those, there must be a good story and twists in the plot."
Nesvadba's stories were truly different, not only in the context of science fiction, but also in Czech literature in general in the second half of the 20th century. The author was particularly interested in the human characters and astutely analysed the motives behind their actions hidden under the surface. He undoubtedly had plenty of inspiration from his practice, as a qualified psychiatrist he was a pioneer of individual and group therapy in this country, and his writing was, so to speak, a part-time job. Nevertheless, he wrote a respectable number of short stories and several novels. The best stories have been included in several science fiction anthologies worldwide and have been translated in the USA, Great Britain, Germany and other countries.
