Spiroergometry in cardiology and sports medicine

The book is based on many years of experience of the authors and is intended not only for physicians performing spiroergometric examinations, but also for other professionals who encounter the results of spiroergometry and apply them in practice, coaches of performance and elite athletes and students of medical and sports faculties.

The richly documented colour publication (71 tables, 225 graphs and figures) will be welcomed especially by cardiologists, internists, physiotherapists and pulmonologists. However, it can also be used for the interpretation of the results of the examination by medical assessors, general practitioners, physiotherapists involved in cardiovascular rehabilitation and especially coaches of performance athletes.

In the introduction, the physiological processes occurring during exercise and the methodological procedures for the correct performance of spiroergometry are described.
In the following sections, the individual parameters monitored in the stress and recovery phase of the spiroergometric examination are described in detail and in a new way. New types of colour charts are used.

A separate chapter discusses the methods for determining both ventilatory thresholds and includes an overview of lactate thresholds, particularly in relation to ventilatory thresholds.
The cardiology section of the book describes the application of spiroergometry results in selected cardiological diseases. A comprehensive chapter also deals with cardiovascular rehabilitation, in particular with the description of the correct way of prescription of training parameters for different modalities of aerobic endurance training (continuous training with constant load, interval training and eccentric training with constant load) within the framework of cardiovascular rehabilitation.

The final part deals with the use of spiroergometry in sports medicine – in ice hockey and rowing – for functional testing of performance and elite athletes, optimization of training and longitudinal monitoring of its effect. In the chapter on rowing, a new spiroergometric test is proposed to determine the ability to work at high percentages of maximal oxygen uptake for long enough.
