Spinning the wool on the spinning wheel and on the spindle
Do you have the opportunity to shear your own sheep's wool?
Would you like to know how to wash and comb it, how to use an old spinning wheel or what kind of spinning wheel and what accessories to get?
The book contains detailed instructions on how to turn sheep's wool into a skein suitable for knitting or weaving, from:
- shearing sheep,
- combing wool on a pick or drum combing machine,
- spinning on a spinning wheel and spindle, etc.
And also advice „ what to do when things go wrong“.
From the author:
When I myself started to spin on an old spinning wheel, I found that it is not easy to spin a soft fine thread suitable for knitting or a strong thread suitable for weaving. The work was not going well and I discovered that not only are skilled spinning hands important, but also the knowledge of how the spinning wheel works, which spinning wheel is best suited to a given type of yarn and that the old spindle, which has been working since prehistoric times, has not fallen into oblivion. This book summarizes my knowledge and experience with sheep wool processing and spinning, which I have gained mainly through my study of old textile techniques at the Bäckedals Folkhogskole in Sweden.
