Apocalypse 1968: The Year America Realised Vietnam Could Not Be Won
1968 can unashamedly be seen as the turning point of the American war in Vietnam. While the American command assumed that an Allied victory was approaching, the reality was completely different. The Allies managed to hold the Marine base at Khe Sanh and militarily succeeded in soundly defeating the costly Viet Cong and NVA Tet Offensive, but politically, almost nothing was achieved. The turbulent year of 1968 marked an intensification of the Vietnamisation process of the war, widespread political problems on the American home front (including the assassination of Martin Luther King), and the realisation that the conflict in Southeast Asia was unwinnable for the USA.

Dalibor Vácha
He studied History and English in České Budějovice. Although he first wrote sci-fi and fantasy for his own private collection, he later moved on to academic texts about the Czechoslovak Legions. The result was a trilogy of monographs published by Epocha: Bratrstvo (Brotherhood, 2015), Ostrovy v bouři (Islands in the Storm, 2016), and Srdce tak bohaté na život (A Heart So Rich in Life, 2017), all connected by the theme of the first Czechoslovak resistance. In 2014, he published the novel Červenobílá (Red and White)—about the legions, of course—for which he received the Knižní klub Literary Prize. He followed this with another legionary novel, Cestou (On the Way, 2016), and a pair of World War II novels: Hranice (The Border, 2015) and Hoří už Praha? (Is Prague Burning Yet?, 2017). However, he never stopped engaging with speculative fiction, and not just as a reader of Frank Herbert, Stephen King, P. K. Dick, Terry Pratchett, and others (not to mention a thousand comics). He also returned to writing speculative fiction, his greatest success being winning the 2014 Daidalos award with the title story of this collection. His stories also ranked among the best from 2015–2017. He often and gladly incorporates historical references into his texts. He fulfilled a dream by publishing the somewhat experimental post-apocalyptic novel Nikam (Nowhere, 2016) and is currently working on a whole range of projects: academic (still those legions!), mainstream (a war novel), and speculative fiction (which he prefers not to talk about until they are mostly finished). There are plenty of damn ideas, but sometimes not enough time.
