Ronald H. Balson's novel, The Secret of the Sound, is a powerful historical story of courage, moral choice, and humanity in dark times.
In 1938, Theodore “Teddy” Hartigan, a young American diplomat from an influential family, is sent to the US consulate in Amsterdam to process visa applications for refugees fleeing the Nazi regime. As the occupation of Europe progresses, Teddy realises his position allows him to save lives. Along with his Jewish partner, Sara, and their adopted daughter, Katy, he joins the resistance and risks everything to help the persecuted.
Balson masterfully combines a thrilling plot with a deep human message, creating a moving story about an ordinary man who decided to act in extraordinary times.
