Shared chromosomes

“I'm just the middleman. Not the one who wants to take your life.”
“Then who is?”
“There’s no time for that now,” he explains. “Come on. He’ll probably show up any minute.” We run off the street.
“Wait, you’re not actually joking!” I break down mentally. “Who’s going to show up?” I probe. I'm scared out of my wits. “Why does someone want to kill me? For God’s sake, answer me!”
The main character tries to take everything with a sense of perspective and humour, but when his life is on the line, the fun stops. His dream is coming true; he's discovering things he's only read about in books and seen in films. A world full of the endless possibilities of bionics, enhanced people, and implants that can do the seemingly impossible. But why the hell does someone want him dead?
