Secret Weapon on the Ussuri
What really happened on Damansky Island in the middle of the Ussuri River? Why did this piece of land, less than a square kilometre in size, become the subject of fierce fighting that threatened to escalate into a full-scale war between two nuclear powers? Is it true that Soviet soldiers used a secret weapon against the Chinese that literally vaporised—according to some estimates—up to 6,000 Chinese fighters along with their equipment, cannons, mortars, and weapons depots? And why were battles fought over such a small piece of land when the Soviet-Chinese border was almost 6,400 kilometres long and the Chinese were laying claim to more than a million square kilometres of the Soviet Far East? In the new volume of the Magnetka Edition, the author not only reconstructs the events of the time but also, based on documents declassified for the 40th anniversary of the conflict, describes in detail what kind of weapon it was. At the time, it was truly secret and was used for the first time on the Ussuri River.
