Scotland Yard Girl

London in the roaring 1920s, where danger lurks in the fog and the law walks the streets in high heels. The Girl from Scotland Yard is a fast-paced romantic crime novel from the master storyteller Edgar Wallace. In this unusual story, a brilliant female detective from Scotland Yard races against time to unravel a web of intrigue, betrayal, and deadly ambition.
Almost all of the main characters are, somewhat unusually, of the fairer sex. Leslie Maughan is the only female investigator at Scotland Yard. The villain – ruthless and sinister – is also a woman, Princess Anita Bellini. And finally, Druze, the murdered butler, is revealed to be a woman in disguise. Wallace has crafted a criminal mystery that should baffle even the most experienced of readers who can usually guess the culprit in the first or second chapter. All the elements of detective stories are woven here into a Gordian knot, the solution to which must ultimately be achieved by a tentative cut rather than a careful unravelling.
