Satan's horses
This historical novel by the experienced novelist Zdeněk Pošíval is set in the Pelhřimov region in 1671. A herd of noble horses suddenly dies at Bukovská Fortress and their guard is found with his head shot off. A mysterious event shakes the life of the Bukovský landowner and his family and triggers a search for the cause of the accident and the culprit. The landowner's son Jožík, the protagonist and narrator of the story, is also involved in the search for the truth and step by step uncovers the secrets of the past and uncovers the mysterious Satan. Why was the blood sacrifice intended for him and who performed it? The author vividly portrays the atmosphere of the time and plays out a dramatic story full of love, sin, greed and violence. It does not aspire to historical history, but above all to a timeless parallel, reminding us that the world changes while human nature persists.
A masterfully written historical detective story without unnecessary romantic trappings.
