František Šmahel began to systematically devote himself to the history of Tábor in the late 1970s. His originally intended revision of the existing knowledge resulted in a completely new, systematic research into the history of Hussite Tabor, which aimed to cover all aspects of the life of the model town founded in 1420.The author's research resulted in more than a dozen studies that shed light not only on the origins of the Republic of Tabor, but also on the history of the Hussite Revolution. The collective edition of these texts, however, does not only enrich our knowledge of the genesis of the Czech Reformation, Hussite Revolution and the history of Tabor, but it is also a glimpse into the author's research workshop, characterized by a precise knowledge of the sources, their original interpretations, as well as respect for the research of many generations of older historians, without whose contribution contemporary historical knowledge would not be possible.
