Prosper Mérimée: Carmen
The literary story of Carmen is imbued with unstoppable passion and relentless fatality. The basis of the story, according to Mérimée's own confession, was taken from a story told by his friend the Countess de Montijo, containing, among other things. a scandalous family affair about a nobleman's love affair with a tobacco factory worker.
By his presence in the novel as a framing narrator, Mérimée creates a space for ironic distance. This is often explained by the fact that in Mérimée the writer has always been at odds with the archivist, or that in the final chapter of Carmen the author bids farewell to literature and turns to history. The story of Carmen has become a symbol of destructive passion.
The twelve-part dramatised reading in continuation of the novella of the same name with music by Georges Bizet, translated by Josef Čermák, was prepared and directed by Jiří Horčička. Performers: Eduard Cupák, Viktor Preiss, František Němec, Marie Marešová, Daniela Šrajerová and Růžena Merunková.
