Prisoner of the Caucasus
Two novellas by L. N. Tolstoy introduce the reader to the battles in the Caucasus. Both confront the idea of battlefield glory and feelings of superiority over the tribal system of the Caucasian tribes with the reality and cruelty of real war, in which glory matters very little and where it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the victor from the vanquished.
