Portnoy Complex

I'm saving, I mean, saving humanity. And yet I can't do it without my psychoanalyst

In 1966 he lay down on the couch of a famous New York shrink and would like to confess to him, because his faith does not count on any other form of sinful relaxation. Alexander Portnoy - a Jewish role model in his... er... Christ years, a successful lawyer in the fledgling field of human rights and, most of all, a woman-hunter obsessed with sex and social altruism - has a beam-like neurosis.
How, under the supervision of Dr. Spielvogel delves into the depths of his disillusionment, fishing out from there, like a conscientious self-tormentor, injustice after injustice. And because at the same time not and not cut the umbilical cord of frustrations, which he attributes to the loving tyranny of petty bourgeois parents, binding Jewish taboos and the world of prejudice, that even the most radical hippie couldn't handle, cannot be expected, that he could get some inner peace. And so Alex's scandalously straightforward and wonderfully bawdy confession, spiced with the vicissitudes of his last relationship with a racy barbie, offers the audience a comedy unprecedented in the days of the sexual revolution.
Roth's masterpiece waited for a Czech edition for the whole "normalisation" twenty years - and then he showed our prudery how far it can go in the interests of literature. Who would be surprised, too, at an author who opened up entirely new horizons with the gift of a subversive Jewish anecdote?

They wrote about the book Portnoy Complex

"A great demonstration of how to penetrate beneath the surface of sexuality. Has any other novel done it so well?"

The Guardian

"Easily one of the two or three most entertaining works of American fiction."

The Chicago Sun-Times

"Probably the most hilarious Jewish joke ever told: bizarre, exaggerated, intimate, profane and above all unbridled fun."

The New York Times

"Obscenity in this novel is not just a mode of expression, it is almost its main theme. The book does not abound in bad language because 'that's the way to talk'; that would probably be the least convincing argument for using obscene language in fiction. Besides, too, few people really talk the way Portnoy talks in this book - for this is a man who speaks under the overwhelming pressure of obsession: he's mean because he wants to be saved.

Excerpt from the book

I implore you, Doctor, tell me who is to blame for our being so flawed? Who is to blame for the fact that we have a mood that is this pathological, hysterical and weak? Do you think I'm exaggerating when I consider it a miracle that I haven't ended up in a mental institution? The hysteria - and the superstitions! The "be careful" and the "be careful"! You can't do that, you can't do that! (...) In this family, the story is told with great amusement of how I once watched a broom out of the window as a child, and then I turned around and asked with hope in my voice: "And Mom, we believe in winter?"
