Poems by Bell Mountains
For centuries, Chinese poetry has captivated us with its depth, beauty, and long-standing tradition. From the very first Czech translations to the present day, we remain fascinated by its sophisticated forms, rich language, and diverse themes that reflect its ancient culture. In the past, a knowledge of poetry was even a necessity – a person could not succeed in a civil service career without it.
One of the most prominent figures in Chinese literature was Wang Anshi (1021–1086) – a poet, politician, and reformer who became a significant personality during the Song dynasty. He wrote in many genres, and his poems reflect the courage and determination he also applied to his reformist policies. His poems are thematically varied and formally elaborate, yet written in a simple and natural language, without excessive embellishment. After years in state service, Wang Anshi retired to Bell Mountain, where he devoted himself to observing nature and writing verse. His poetry combines strength and gentleness – he can be unyielding and direct, but also witty, sensitive, and kind.
This book offers Czech readers a unique insight into one of the most important poets of the Northern Song era. It provides a powerful glimpse into the soul of a man who yearned for a just society as well as a calm, balanced life in quiet harmony with nature and poetry.
