A new book from a popular author and winner of the prestigious Magnesia Litera award
The distance between people can be boundless.
Marie, a divorced forty-seven-year-old literature lecturer, finds herself for the summer in her sister's half-empty flat in Český Krumlov. From there, she travels to the countryside to care for her seriously ill parents, and in her free moments, she wanders through the tourist-crowded streets of Krumlov. It is there she meets Filip, a young bookseller. Their budding romance is filled with the atmosphere of a hot July and numerous literary connotations.
However, Marie's main goal is to mend the relationship with her sister and care for her parents—a dominant father and a gentle, selfless mother. And to come to terms with her own loneliness. She perceives this as being stuck in time, with memories from the past weighing down on her—and the prospect of old age on the other side. Following a family tradition of strong male role models, Marie reflects on what has been, while also asking herself how to live on and what to do with a “Shakespearean love”…
