Alligator Point, Louisiana.

The remote areas around New Orleans have always lived their own lives, shrouded in superstition and the shadow of voodoo and zombies.

Nine-year-old, inquisitive Pontiac has heard stories about the “Piper” – a murderous creature from the swamps – all her life. Now, the legend seems to be turning into a terrifying reality: something deep in the bayou is starting to call out to unsuspecting children, persuading them under various pretexts to leave the safety of their homes and venture into the unknown. Pontiac, who has already lost her mother and has to endure her broken father's alcoholic escapades, now loses her best friend. Many others also face the loss of loved ones and their illusions about life. One way for the desperate residents of the Point to begin to fight back against their misfortune is to confess the sins of their distant ancestors – the notoriously famous slave traders, Lafitte's pirates. If they do not… the Piper will take its toll.
