In 1954 it was staged by director Přemysl Pražský with Karel Pavlík, Bedřich Karen, Václav Voska, Jiřina Petrovická and Miroslav Doležal in the leading roles. "To the king you must give / your fortune and your life. But honour / is the preserve of the soul / and the soul belongs only to God. " These are the most famous lines from Calderón's play The Judge of Zalamea. The imperative of honour, baroque honour, which is more important than love or even life, is one of its central themes.
