Paymaster

Fear has taken over the Old Town of Prague and it is not advisable to go out after dark. But people are unsure of life even behind the boarded-up doors of their homes. The chests of the guilds in the Old Town Hall have been robbed and Pardus, the town crier, is beginning to despair. He is unable to disperse the band of Jouza the Devil, and it appears that the band is being helped by someone from King Wenceslas IV's inner circle. On top of that, a phantom begins to appear on the houses and their roofs, which some consider to be a bat, others a giant spider.

Lukáš, an apprentice plate maker, is experiencing troubled years in his uncle's house and has only two desires: to learn a trade and be near Angela, daughter of the Duke of Milan's envoy. However, without wishing it, he is drawn into the events that terrify the town, and from that moment on, the hunt for him begins. Every one of his stumbles could be his last.
