Pavel Kosatík: Sulek paints
Pavel Kosatík chose the person of the peculiar painter Svatopluk Sulka as the object of his book. Born in 1921, he studied after the Second World War at the prestigious Academy of Montmartre in Paris, in the studio of Fernand Léger. He was allowed to exhibit at home for the first time in 1958, at the intercession of Professor Václav Černý. Later he painted mainly exotic subjects: He stayed in Corsica, Egypt, Morocco, and took a painting trip by boat to India. However, his biography is not just an ordinary book "about the painter and his paintings". It is directed towards a much broader reflection on human life, transformed into creation. "When I got to know him, it seemed to me at first that I was confronted with a natural phenomenon rather than a human being," the artist says of his subject. "Sulek subordinated literally everything to his painting. When he started a job, he never calculated the outcome. He did not think ahead, he always lived only in the moment he was in. " The theme of this book is human freedom. It reads: Vladimir Brabec.
