Pagan sacrificial sites, graves and antiquities in Bohemia

Matyáš Kalina of Jäthenstein (1772-1848) was a lawyer, dean of the Faculty of Law at Charles University, archaeologist, one of the founders of Czech archaeology, and philanthropist. For the first time in Czech archaeology we encounter a new, translated and annotated edition of one of its "cornerstones", a work that was at the birth of archaeological knowledge, not unjustly compared to the first volumes of Palacký's History and Šafařík's Slavonic Antiquities. The book by Matyáš Kalina of Jäthenstein represents the first archaeological treatment of Bohemia's past, the first representative work of this emerging discipline, the first detailed inventory of archaeological finds in Bohemia, accompanied by the first archaeological map of Bohemia. The edition of Kalin's "Offerings" makes available an important scientific work of the past both as a monument of the development of science and culture in general and as a source useful for contemporary science. In this way, many forgotten or poorly known older finds and sites are being brought back into the circulation of archaeological practice. After almost two centuries, this monument of Czech scientific romanticism in the field of archaeology is now in the hands of readers. The extensive appendix brings Kalin's original pictorial tables and a number of contemporary and new illustrations.

The publication brings new edition of the first representative work devoted to Czech archeology in a modern sense, both in the original German version from the 19th century and in the Czech translation. Here you will find the first detailed list of archaeological finds in Bohemia and the first archaeological map of Bohemia. In addition to the introductory study, the book also contains a note-taking apparatus, a complete bibliography of the original file and an overview of related modern literature.
