Paddington Bear
Meet Paddington Bear, a favourite of the Queen herself
For British children, Paddington Bear is much like Krteček (the Little Mole) is for Czech children. The exceptionally charming and witty story of an orphaned bear from Darkest Peru, taken in by Mr and Mrs Brown in London, will capture everyone's heart. Wherever this seemingly ordinary furry friend goes, extraordinary things begin to happen. For Mr and Mrs Brown, this isn't always a pleasant experience, as it will take a great deal of patience, nerves, and last but not least, money before Paddington gets used to all the conveniences of civilisation.
Michael Bond
A British writer famous for his series of children's books about Paddington Bear. The first of these was published in 1958 while he was working as a BBC television cameraman. Ten years later, he began writing full-time. To date, 35 million copies of the Paddington story books have been sold in more than forty languages. The bear has lent his name to pop groups, horse races, plays and television series. In 1997, Michael Bond received an OBE for his services to children's literature. In 2007, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Reading. Paddington himself has a bronze statue at Paddington Station, after which he is named, and near which his author lived.
