Oxygen
Oxygen is the symbol of life. But it also has a second, much darker side. Besides being a life-giving elixir, it also becomes a poison that every living organism must fight with various means, from antioxidants to ingenious physiological adaptations. Oxygen is apparently involved in the ageing of our bodies, in age-related diseases, and in death, which seems to be the inevitable consequence of its lifelong consumption. At least, that is what British biochemist and author of several popular science books, Nick Lane, claims in his fascinating, groundbreaking book, packed with an immense amount of facts. Across fifteen chapters, he reveals the irreplaceable role of oxygen in the evolution of life on Earth and in the life of each of us.
