On the train

A writer and a therapist meet on a train. This is not the beginning of an anecdote, but of a catchy conversational comedy by the Austrian bestseller!

In a train compartment on the journey from Vienna to Munich, a mismatched pair of strangers, Eduard Brünhofer, an elderly burnt-out author of successful love novels, and Catrin Meyer, a middle-aged therapist shrouded in mystery, meet by chance. A writer suffering from writer's block strikes up an intimate conversation with an unknown woman almost against his will, but it turns out to be unbearably one-sided. While Eduard gradually reveals the most intimate aspects of his own existence and his views on literature, marriage and life in general, his companion suspiciously holds back and asks him difficult questions, which he writes about in his novels but does not really know the answers to: How to be happy with someone for years? What to do to stay yourself in a relationship? What exactly is the appeal of infidelity? The cornered novelist begins to realise that this encounter could be one of those fateful ones...
The author of the award-winning Good Against the North and Every Seventh Wave returns with intimate prose full of sharp humour and apt observations on the craft of writing and relationships.

Glattauer is read in one breath! The Good vs. the North and the slightly more oppressive novel Forever Yours are still some of my greatest reading experiences. It's a blast to have him back with a new book after all these years!
