Nursing care in neonatology
The book is intended for students in the following non-medical healthcare professions: general nurses, paediatric nurses and midwives. It presents a comprehensive view of the issues of nursing care for newborns, while also focusing on innovative procedures and standards recommended by international research and the Czech Neonatology Society of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkyně. It summarises the general principles of neonatology from a nursing perspective, while also providing examples of specific procedures for newborns with certain medical complications.
This publication can serve as a basic textbook for students and nurses in these professions, but it also contains topics from specialised postgraduate programmes for nurses – Paediatric Nurse or Intensive Care in Neonatology. The publication offers the reader the theoretical knowledge necessary to provide nursing care for healthy newborns, but also for high-risk newborns or those with a specific pathology requiring hospitalisation in a higher-level neonatal unit.
The work contains previously unpublished comprehensive information on various newborn diseases, as well as information on psychological support and care for the parents of newborns in palliative care. Thanks to technological advances, the quality of intensive care provided has improved over the last 30 years, and neonatal mortality and morbidity have decreased. In line with current trends, the focus of healthcare professionals is not only on the child, but also on the parents. The chapter on crisis intervention for parents is devoted to this issue. The chapter on resuscitation, which reflects the latest trends and procedures, is also important.
Despite its high level of expertise, the publication is also suitable for paediatric nurses working in outpatient clinics or in the field, and for the general public.
The book is supplemented with tables and illustrations.
