Northern Indo-European pre-Christian religions
This publication offers analytical insights into the pre-Christian religions of the northern Indo-Europeans, namely the Celts, Germanic peoples, and Balts. Through archaeological, philological, and ethnological perspectives, the author presents a critical synthesis of current knowledge on the pantheons, rituals, and mythologies that once formed the “pillars” of these religious cultures across three thematic chapters. In addition to exploring the possibilities of reconstructing these systems, which were abandoned by their followers during late antiquity or the Middle Ages as a result of adopting Christianity, the author also carefully examines the ambiguities, complications, and interpretative challenges concerning their partial structures or elements. Through a balanced combination of logical constructivism and critical deconstruction, the publication provides readers with credible outlines of archaic traditions that have influenced—as a substratal heritage—not only Western Christianity but also the subsequent secularised cultures of Northern Europe.
