Robin Cook

Robin Cook (born 4 May 1940, New York) is an American physician and author, best known for his medical-themed literary works written in the thriller genre. In 1966, he successfully graduated from medical school at Columbia University. After his studies, he worked in surgery at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu, served in the US Navy, and achieved the rank of lieutenant. In 1971, he joined the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he remained until 1975. He subsequently opened a private practice in Boston, where in 1977 he wrote the novel Coma, which immediately became a bestseller upon its release and, less than a year later in 1978, became the first of Cook's books to be adapted into a film. His very first work, however, was the book The Year of the Intern, published in the USA in 1972. Some of his other books (including Coma) have also been adapted for the screen. His publisher was Reader's Digest, and in the Czech Republic, Ikar. He predominantly writes novels set in the medical world (an exception being Sphinx from 1979). Some of his works are timeless, but for the most part, they accurately depict the environment of contemporary medicine. Thus, although his works in many cases become science fiction, they realistically fit into the modern world and are very favourably received by critics.
