Negotiator

When words save lives. The first Czech book interview with a police negotiator!

Suicides, escalated conflicts, hostage-taking, barricade situations... few people encounter these dark sides of our modern world more often than police negotiators. At the same time, few have the opportunity they do to reverse the course of events and turn a nightmare into a solvable situation.
Karel Pošíval is one of those who tries to save people's lives by listening and talking. For many years, he has been a police negotiator with the Prague Rapid Response Unit and the coordinator of the Prague team of police negotiators. In this book-length interview, he talks about his most interesting cases, explaining negotiation methods and techniques (dominated by humanity and authenticity, working with emotions, active listening, and helping people save face). He presents the art of negotiation as a powerful tool, a skill applicable not only in tense crisis situations but also in everyday relationship conflicts and in successful business.
After reading this book, you may well realise that the negotiation techniques and strategies in your company, your team, your family, and your relationships are severely lacking... And that learning a little something from Karel Pošíval could significantly improve your life.

What they wrote about the book:

With his book *The Negotiator*, Karel Pošíval has made a significant contribution to the field of crisis negotiation, not only in the Czech Republic. His real-life experiences as a front-line police negotiator give legitimacy and weight to his key insights into the many challenges of crisis negotiation. More importantly, his practical advice serves to better understand the motivations of the actors involved, which helps to identify the best approach to securing their non-violent cooperation. While few will ever be involved in such life-and-death incidents, Karel's insights into interpersonal communication have wide applicability in resolving a broad range of conflicts in everyday life. Karel is a true "life-saver"; his knowledge, skills, and insights are important for all negotiators. They should listen carefully and learn from them.

Karel Pošíval

Karel Pošíval has been with the Prague police since 2001. He started at a local department in the fourth Prague district, moved on to the patrol service department, and from there transferred to the Rapid Response Unit. Here he gained his specialisation as a police negotiator. He has been working in this specialisation for 17 years. In recent years, he has been managing and methodologically leading the team of Prague police negotiators, which is his main job. He holds regular seminars for police officers and interested parties from the civilian sector in the field of crisis communication and negotiation. His aim is to pass on the principles that are fundamental to the success of police negotiators in resolving crisis situations, such as suicides, hostage-takings, or barricade situations. These principles are based on respect, reverence, calmness, interest in the other person, patience, and flexibility.
