Needs of a child with diabetes mellitus

The publication is currently focused on the specifics of DM from the nursing perspective, as there is little professional literature on this issue. It comprehensively and holistically addresses the biological, psychological, social and economic needs of the child and family struggling with this serious lifelong chronic illness.

The nutritional requirements of a child with DM are detailed, including advice on proper nutrition, which is the basis for the success of treatment. The need for defecation, physical activity and also psychological needs, which differ at different ages, are discussed in terms of coping with the disease. In the publication, the authors have made significant use of examples of insulin application in various ways, which play an irreplaceable role in the educational process, and have pointed out the economic consequences of the disease.

The textbook is intended for the undergraduate training of students of non-medical health care disciplines, especially nursing (pediatric nursing) and midwifery, as well as nurses and other non-medical health care workers in practice. However, it will also serve as an important source of information for laymen, e.g. families with a child with DM or teachers in pre-school preparation and school teaching of pupils with this disease.
