Names
Can a name influence the course of our lives? A poignant novel about domestic abuse.
October 1987. Cora goes to the registry office to register the birth of her son. Her husband, Gordon, is a popular and respected doctor in public, but at home he rules with an iron fist. Gordon insists the baby be named after him, Cora would like the name Julian, and nine-year-old Maia suggests calling her little brother Bear. When the registrar asks Cora what name she wants to give her son, she hesitates... From this moment on, three alternative stories unfold over thirty-five years – three versions of the lives of Cora, her son, and her entire family, completely transformed by that single choice. The novel explores the painful consequences of domestic abuse, complex family relationships, and the possibility of liberation and healing.
