Excerpt:

When there was a crash behind her, she looked back to see Samuel had closed the door to the garden and was looking anxiously out through its glass surface. She straightened up and was still shaking when she asked: "What was that?" "I don't know, Faith. A bigger animal, I guess. A wolf, a wild dog... there are plenty of them running around," he replied thoughtfully, never taking his eyes off the garden. "So close to people? I did not think they would venture so near the dwellings." She was astonished. "When they're hungry, they do it quite routinely. They go after pets and stuff," he explained, and she heard a trace of remorse in his voice as he added: "I told you the surrounding woods were dangerous."
