Miloš Doležal: As if we were going to die today

The basic motive for writing this book was an urgent desire to understand who Josef Toufar was and what all in his fate preceded the last act. Years of research, gathering documents and witness testimonies form the support system of the work. The author does not treat the extensive biographical portrait of Father Toufar as a cold historical treatise, it does not lack immediacy or humour, and yet it does not give in one step to the demand for absolute documentary fidelity. The resulting whole is also a thoroughly rendered chronicle of life in the Highlands in the first half of the last century, a landscape that bears the stigmata of heroes and martyrs. It is no coincidence that the poet and historian Zbyněk Hejda said that "Doležal is giving Vysočina back its memory".
