Mills of Fate
Secrets of the past and revenge in Öland
In the middle of the night, twelve-year-old Jonas Kloss knocks on the door of former sailor Gerlof Davidsson and tells him in horror that he saw a ship at sea with dying sailors and a madman with an axe.
Öland is still in its peak tourist season, with thousands of people coming here, but not everyone wants to spend their holidays here or admire the beauty of the island. An old man named Aron Fredh returns to Öland after many years abroad with one goal: to get revenge. The explanation must be sought in the past as well as in the present, and above all in the wealthy Kloss family, which owns a luxurious holiday resort on the island. Only Gerlof is beginning to suspect who Fredh might be; maybe he even met him a long time ago. The two were standing together in the cemetery by a freshly dug grave when they heard a banging sound coming from the coffin.
Johan Theorin
Johan Theorin was born 3.9. 1963 in Gothenburg. From childhood he spent every summer on the island of Öland, which had a fatal influence on his later literary work. His mother's family, made up mainly of sailors, fishermen and farmers, had lived here for centuries and cared for the island's heritage, mysterious stories and folklore. This almost mystical setting inspired him to write a series of stories in which he masterfully combines the genius loci of Öland with a detective plot. He currently lives in Gothenburg and works as a journalist. Among other reasons, he is often compared to Stieg Larsson. The author began his literary career writing short stories for various magazines and anthologies. His first novel Skumtimmen (Mlhy Ölandu, MOBA - November 2011) was published in the spring of 2007 and became an instant bestseller. So far it has been published in twenty countries, including Germany, USA, Brazil, Thailand or Slovakia, and in 2007 won the Swedish Academy of Detective Fiction's award for the best detective story of the year.
