May
In 1774, Ignác Schiffner brutally killed his father in Dubá near the statue of Saint Procopius. After the crime, he was soon caught, imprisoned, and after a short trial, sentenced to death by breaking the wheel. The sentence was carried out at the Mladá Boleslav execution ground on a hill characteristically called Na spravedlnosti. He was the last person to be executed in this very cruel way in our countries. The grim event recorded by parish priest Arnošt Glaser inspired one of the most important Czech poets, Karel Hynek Mácha, to write the lyric-epic composition May, which is considered the pinnacle of our romanticism and one of the most beautiful poems ever. In 2008, it was also adapted into a film.
