A powerful story where bigotry gets a well-deserved lesson from the weakest opponent
A Prayer for Katherine Horovitz is a psychological novel inspired by true events. Arnošt Lustig wrote this book in 12 days. The story takes place in 1943. The Germans have captured a group of twenty Jewish merchants in Sicily, led by Mr Cohen, on the pretext of exchanging them for captured German officers. They are promised that they will all be taken by train to an American ship for a million francs, including the young dancer Katherine Horovitz, but in reality they will all find death in a concentration camp. The character of Katerina Horovitz is inspired by a Polish actress who, on her way to the gas chamber - just like the book's Katerina - snatched a gun from a German officer and shot him.
