Martyr
The second instalment of the harsh and merciless trilogy The Covenant of Steel from the master of epic fantasy, Anthony Ryan
Alwyn Scribe wakes beneath the rustling treetops, a sound that always calms him when his task is to kill. But this time, Alwyn does not return to the Shavine Forest as an outlaw, but as a scribe and the indispensable advisor to the Chosen Lady, Evadine Courlain. And with a terrible headache to boot.
The gripping plot of the second book in The Covenant of Steel series will take Evadine, Alwyn, and their entire company across Albermaine and south to Alundia. Are they truly there just to pacify the rebellious nobility and protect the orthodox pilgrims, or did the king send them there to die, to be rid of a troublesome martyr who refuses to die? In magnificent battles, Alwyn must prove that he is not only an obedient soldier but also a good commander and strategist.
This dangerous balancing act between the Crown and the Covenant will eventually lead Alwyn even further south into the unexplored Caerithian Desert, where he will uncover the terrifying secret of the first Scourge and the mysterious book he received from the Sack Witch.
Reviews:
Anthony Ryan's latest series once again proves how easily this author can win over readers with his characters. Alwyn is certainly no hero—though he gets a rough ride from those who are even bigger monsters or psychopaths, for most of the book he remains consistently true to his cynical view of life and the world.

In the outstanding sequel to The Pariah, Anthony Ryan once again demonstrates his extraordinary gift for epic fantasy. Ryan's evocative prose enhances a suspenseful, intricate story, and the ending will have fans counting the days until the next instalment. This one goes full-throttle.
