They called him the "saviour of Slovakia" and the "Czech Patton". He fought in the French Foreign Legion, on the front lines of the First World War, and for Czechoslovakia against Poland and Hungary. Josef Šnejdárek was a Czechoslovak army general and a French legionary.
The memoirs of a Czechoslovak general who began his military career as a lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian army but soon left for adventure in Africa, where he joined the French Foreign Legion. He describes the life of a legionary in the desert through the eyes of a Czech soldier. He took part in the First World War in the French trenches, commanding a regiment of Algerian riflemen on the front. During the war, he also participated in the formation of the Czechoslovak Legions in France in cooperation with Milan R. Štefánik. After the war, in 1919, he took part in the Czechoslovak army's fight against Hungary.
