Luigi Pirandello: The unfortunate Mattia Pascal

The young Mattia Pascal goes from rich man to almost beggar, his marriage crashes on his evil mother-in-law. His fondest dream is to escape from this humiliating situation. But is it possible to leave what we were and become someone completely different? Choose a new destiny? The new person, the other person, must have a history, a story, must answer the questions of others: Where are you from? What were you doing? Where are your parents? To answer them is to lie; not to answer them is to condemn oneself to voluntary solitude, to stand outside society. A man without a past is suspicious?
